THE GOD WHO IS WITH US.
Essentially the bible represents a revelation of God. The theology of a passage should be our primary concern, all other aspects being secondary, though important. There is a significant change when we come to Genesis Ch. 2 v 4. The title "God" in Chapter 1 becomes the title " The Lord God" in Chapter 2 and this change is quite deliberate. This new title adds the name JEHOVAH (or YAHWEH in Hebrew) to the name ELOHIM of Chapter 1.
The significance of the name Jehovah appears to be associated with God's covenant with the nation of Israel (Exodus Ch 3 v 15), and since, through Israel, blessings would come to all nations of the earth this title is describing the God who covenants with all men, on the basis of faith.
By placing these two titles at the outset of biblical revelation we are faced with a remarkable contrast.
GENESIS CH 1 - GOD - ELOHIM - TRANSCENDENT - ABOVE US - demanding worship
GENESIS CH 2 - LORD GOD - YAHWEH ELOHIM - IMMANENT - WITH US - seeking fellowship.
Nothing could be more awe - inspiring than this. The God of glory - above all - transcending all - creator of the COSMOS bringing all believers into unbroken fellowship with Himself in ultimate triumph. This is the unmistakable message of the bible.
The following description of God, which I picked up in the mists of time, is by an anonymous author, but, I believe is worthy of our consideration.
Yahweh is the absolutely existing One, the One who simply is, who did not come into being, who does not go out of being, who never changes in His being, because He is absolute being, He depends on nothing for his being, and all else depends on Him for its being.
His name is majestic in all the earth, there is no place on earth where He is not Yahweh, where He is not the absolute One. Everything else depends on Him absolutely, He has no rivals anywhere, He has no equal anywhere, He is above all things everywhere, He sustains all things everywhere, He is the ground and goal of all things everywhere, He is greater, wiser, more beautiful, and more wonderful, than all things everywhere. To fail to worship Him, is to miss out on everything.
He never had a beginning and never will end, He is absolute reality, He is utterly independent, everything that is not God depends on Him, all that is amazing in the universe is as nothing compared to Him, He is constant, He never changes because He is perfect, and you do not change perfection. He cannot be improved upon, He is not becoming anything, He is who He is, and always will be. He is the absolute standard of truth and goodness and beauty. He requires no law books to teach Him, no guild to judge His worth, He is Himself the standard that is right, all that is true, all that is beautiful.
He does what He pleases in heaven and on earth, and everything He does is in perfect accord with His eternal unchanging and perfect character. All reality that is outside of Him he created and designed and governs as the absolute reality. So He is utterly free from any constraints that don't originate from the counsel of His own will. He is the most important reality in all that exists. He is more worthy of our interest, and attention, and admiration, and enjoyment, than all other realities including the entire universe.
GOD IS WHO HE IS AND WHO HE FOREVER WILL BE THEREFORE IT IS A UNIVERSAL OUTRAGE BILLIONS OF TIMES OVER THAT THIS GOD IS IGNORED, IS QUESTIONED, IS CRITICIZED, IS CONSIDERED AS NOTHING AND GIVEN LESS THOUGHT THAN THE FURNITURE IN OUR HOUSES!
All believers should become GOD - BESOTTED PEOPLE because He is the highest, noblest, the most attractive object, and worthy of our wholehearted commitment.
