                                       THE GOD WHO IS SOVEREIGN

By this we mean there is none higher in all the universe; HE IS ABOVE ALL, THE MOST HIGH.   The Bible abounds with statements to this effect.

Romans Ch 9 v 5          "Christ, who is overall, God blessed forever."
Romans Ch 11 v 36       "Of Him and through Him and unto Him are all things."
Ephesians Ch 4 v 6       "He is above all and through all and in you all."
Colossians Ch 1 v 17      "He is before all things and by Him all things consist."
Colossians Ch 2 v 10     "He is the head of every principality and power."
1st Timothy Ch 6 v 15   "He is the blessed and only potentate, the King of Kings
                                            and Lord of Lords."
Revelation Ch 1 v 8       "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and ending, 
                                            saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who is to 
                                            come, the Almighty."


The existence of a supreme power in the universe should be a source of comfort, especially since the power is benign, but in an unbelieving world the subject seems to bring forth an attitude of scepticism.   

However, unbelief will not alter the facts.   Some of us think that by repeating a lie over and over, we make that lie the truth; there is an absolute sovereign power controlling the universe, otherwise the whole creation would descend into to uncontrollable chaos.   We consider, today, the extend of this sovereignty and ask the question what does it mean for us?  

The bible does not seek to prove the existence of God, it begins with the assumption that He is.   However, it does develop the truth of His sovereignty, in its many different facets.   

Daniel Ch 4 v 17   "To the intent that the living may know, that the most high ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever He will."

Proverbs Ch 21 v 1   "The kings heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water, He turneth it withsoever He will."

Acts Ch 4 v 27 /28   " Both Herod and Pontius Pilot, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together for to do whatsoever Thy hand and Thy counsel determined before to be done."


WHOMSOEVER HE WILL, WITHERSOEVER HE WILL, WHATSOEVER  HE WILL

There is no place, or situation, or event, or function, or living creature, that is outside His sovereign control.   The Psalmist confirms this very fact  (Psalm 115 v 3)  "Our God is in the heavens; He hath done whatsoever He please". (Psalm 135 v 5/6)  "For I know that the Lord is great and that our Lord is above all gods; whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did He in heaven and on earth."

The word used here for Lord is different to what we have already seen.  We have considered the title ELOHIM, and the title JEHOVAH, now we have ADONAHY, which means sovereign Lord.   He is sovereign Lord in all matters affecting all creatures in all the universe.   

NATIONS RISE AND FALL AT HIS COMMAND, THE EARTH CANNOT CONTAIN HIM, HE DETERMINES THE APPOINTED TIMES OF ALL LIVING CREATURES, HE SETS THE BOUNDS OF OUR EARTHLY HABITATION, HE ENTERED OUR WORLD IN HUMAN FLESH, TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN GOD AND MAN.   HE COMMANDS ALL MEN EVERYWHERE TO REPENT, HE REMINDS US WE ARE ALL ACCOUNTABLE TO HIM.

It is futile to oppose Him, it is folly to ignore Him, it is wise to seek Him, and when we do, we will find He is not far away from anyone of us,   Call upon Him
for
        
           WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UPON THE NAME OF THE LORD
           SHALL BE SAVED.   Romans Ch. 10 v 13
